City Council Recognizes Nurses Week

Nurses represent the largest single component of the healthcare profession, with an estimated population of more than 4 million registered nurses in the country.

A resolution recognizing May 6, 2022, through May 12, 2022, as “National Nurses Week” states that, “Nurses are public health heroes who make our communities safer and healthier, and contribute to our community as community advocates, educators, and providers of critical health services.”

On the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses are the cornerstone of our public health infrastructure, promoting healthy lifestyles, educating communities on disease prevention and health promotion, and providing critical care in a variety of settings.

Over 160 thousand nurses work in Massachusetts, including Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners, staff nurses, nurse educators, school nurses, public health nurses, long-term care nurses, nurse managers, and nurses in many other practice areas. Over 10 thousand of these nurses work in the City of Boston.

This week, the Council recognized the significant contributions of all nurses, encouraged healthcare employers to drastically improve working conditions for our nurses, and expressed Boston’s deep gratitude to our nurses for all that they do for our communities.
