Black History Boston: Beverly Morgan-Welch
Today, we honor the contributions of Beverly Morgan-Welch, the Griot of Black History!
For 16 years, Beverly Morgan-Welch served as the Executive Director of the Museum of African American History (MAAH). The Museum is the largest and oldest museum in New England dedicated to preserving the contributions of African Americans in Massachusetts. Beverly worked to develop programming and special events to illuminate Black heritage within Boston, such as Teacher Summer Institutes, Dig and Discover Archeology Camp, Underground Railroad Overnight Adventures, Living Legend Awards, and Profiles in Color. Beverly now serves as the Associate Director for External Affairs for the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History in Washington D.C. She oversees education, public programs, and special events for the Museum.
Honors and Awards:
- Recipient of the Smith Medal (2009)
- Appointed to the Smith College Board of Trustee's (2019)
- Recipient of honorary doctorate from Suffolk University
- Recipient of the President’s Distinguished Service Award from Bunker Hill Community College (2014)
Beverly Morgan-Welch’s work to preserve and illuminate African American History spans decades. Her work has allowed Bostonians to learn about and reclaim a history that might otherwise have been lost.
