We're hiring more planners and engineers across the Public Works and Transportation Departments.
Mayor Michelle Wu has an ambitious transportation agenda for Boston: become a Green New Deal City and build streets that work for everyone. We are:
- Rebuilding major corridors with multimodal designs that prioritize transit, walking, and biking
- Making our streets safer through traffic calming and a Complete Streets approach
- Advancing fare free bus transit with unique fare-free pilot programs on major bus lines to increase transportation justice
- Prioritizing public transit with dedicated bus lanes and signal priority
- Building a low-stress, connected bike network with protected bicycle facilities to make Boston one of the best bike cities in America
- Expanding our publicly-owned BlueBikes bike share system
- Integrating Green infrastructure on our streets to mitigate climate impacts and heat stress
To do this, we need a team of planners, engineers, and senior leaders whose vision matches the bold change were working to carry out. Available PositionsThe Deputy Chief of Streets for Infrastructure Design and Construction will oversee the delivery of infrastructure projects on Boston’s streets and serve as a member of the Streets Cabinet leadership team. They will manage a capital planning, design, and construction program to deliver safe, inclusive and multimodal streets and public spaces, and accelerate the pace of investment and transformation.
The Deputy Chief of Streets for Transportation will oversee transportation operations, traffic management, and engineering, and serve as Commissioner of the Boston Transportation Department. The Deputy Chief will be a key partner in working toward a safe, equitable, multimodal transportation system, transforming our streets to reduce our overreliance on single-occupancy vehicles, and implementing policies that reflect our values of inclusivity, accessibility, and sustainability.
The Bridge Construction Engineer will help reshape our city by being part of the team to oversee the construction of bridges, stairways, footpaths and other assets that are within the Structures portfolio of the Public Works Department.
The Sr. Civil Engineer will perform engineering duties to support the Public Works Department’s mission of maintaining, enhancing, and evolving the public rights of way in the City of Boston. Join us to help make our streets work for everyone.
The Asst. Civil Engineer will perform engineering duties to support the Public Works Department’s mission of maintaining, enhancing, and evolving the public rights of way in the City of Boston. Join us to help make our streets work for everyone.
Help plan for the future of how Bostonians get around and address fossil fuel emissions. The New Mobility Planner will develop and manage innovative programs and create public/private partnerships to ensure we are using every tool possible to increase multi-modal transportation, safety and effective use of our streets.
Collaborate with Boston residents on projects to improve safety and encourage bicycling and walking. The selected applicant will support street design efforts across the City and run educational programs.
Help expand access to transportation services, improving safety, and ensuring reliability. Work on a fast-paced team to find solutions for improving transit service across Boston in close partnership with the MBTA and communities.
Help catalyze change in how people travel in Boston's vibrant neighborhoods. Coordinate district-scale action plans from concept to implementation that create safe walking environments, include bus and bike facilities, and plan ahead for a technology-driven, shared-transportation future. Steer growth in the neighborhoods by reviewing new private development projects.
Help support the Small Scale Safety improvement program by implementing quick-build solutions to make Boston’s streets safer. The Vision Zero/Small Scale Safety Assistant Engineer performs professional traffic engineering work of substantial difficulty and importance utilizing good engineering judgment in adherence to city/state/federal standards, guidelines, and policies.
Help support the Small Scale Safety improvement program by implementing quick-build solutions to make Boston’s streets safer. Perform field surveys and a wide variety of other beginning level professional civil engineering work in the field and the office.
The Vision Zero/Small Scale Safety Planner will work on projects that will realize the City’s vision to create streets and public spaces that are vibrant, multimodal, resilient, and safe. The planner’s particular focus will be on rapid, quick build interventions to lower the number of fatal and serious crashes on Boston’s roadways and increase the number of people bicycling and walking in the City.

What are the salary and benefits for the jobs?The salary depends on the job. All of the full-time jobs come with benefits and selected applicants may be eligible to join a union. You can see the salary range and union affiliation when the positions are posted to the Career Center.
Are these on-going, full-time positions?Unless noted, these are on-going, full-time positions with benefits. There is a six-month probationary period for all new hires at the City of Boston.
