City Council Supports Fair Contract for Waste Workers

The Council adopted a resolution offered by Councilors FitzGerald, Murphy, and Flynn expressing strong support for Teamsters Local 25 amid an ongoing labor dispute with Republic Services, one of the nation’s largest waste disposal companies. The Council is urging Republic Services to return to the bargaining table and agree to a fair contract.

Republic Services, a Fortune 500 company operating more than 360 collection facilities and servicing 13 million customers annually, has seen record financial gains – projecting $2.3 billion in free cash flow in 2025. Despite these profits and an executive compensation package that includes over $12 million for the company’s CEO, workers say they are being denied fair wages, health benefits, and working conditions.

Over 400 members of Teamsters Local 25 provide essential waste and recycling services across Massachusetts. According to the resolution, these frontline workers have been negotiating in good faith for several weeks but say the company has refused to meet reasonable demands. In response, the union has voted to strike and will maintain picket lines around the clock until a fair agreement is reached.

The Council condemned the company’s refusal to negotiate, citing widespread disruptions to waste collection services throughout the state. The resolution calls on Republic Services to treat its workers fairly and respect community labor standards by resuming negotiations and restoring services immediately.
