The Coastal Resilience Solutions for East Boston and Charlestown Phase 1 report (2017) first identified this coastal flood resilience measure. When deployed, it blocks storm surge flood waters from passing under Sumner Street via the Greenway, protecting almost 4,300 residents, at least 70 businesses, and critical infrastructure.
The City is currently improving the Greenway to address chronic flooding, improve lighting, upgrade site amenities, and add rain gardens and trees. The park will be under construction until approximately December 2026 and will be closed to the public between Marginal Street and Porter Street, including the crossing at Gove Street. The deployable barrier location will remain the same after construction, and the concrete columns and pad that support the flood barrier will be protected during construction.
